Sometimes a thriller comes along that will literally have you on the edge of your seat, and I mean ready to fall down.
And one such novel is The Players by Darren O'Sullivan.
Are you ready to play?
A stranger has you cornered.
They call themselves The Host.
You are forced to play their game.
In it one person can live and the other must die.
You are the next player.
You have a choice to make.
This is a game where nobody wins…
Scary, haunting, a book that has you questioning what would you do if faced with the same situations as the victims in this sinister tale.
Told from three points of view, this novel is about a high stakes game that literally comes down to kill or be killed.
A gripping, must-read thriller for fans of THE CHAIN and THE HOLDOUT and readers of Steve Cavanagh and John Marrs.
Explosive!
We follow 'The Host', in the city of Peterborough, this unknown organiser - who always wears a motorbike helmet to hide their identity - conducts two (successful) experiments, games designed to test a person's morale compass.
The Host wants to prove without a doubt that there is no such thing as inherent human goodness and that given the right circumstance’s, humans are always capable of crossing the thin line between good and evil.
The first game involves two players. Timothy Smart, a seemingly normal, nice guy who visits a Chinese restaurant every Tuesday Night and Michelle Reed who works at the Chinese restaurant.
In this game it’s kill or be killed
Each game follows the same premise. The decision impossible. Kill somebody or face having someone close to you die instead, or let that other victim become the killer and the consequence is you dying.
Could you make that choice?
DS Karen Holt, who has been suspended from her job, cannot be deterred from getting involved with the case of The Host. Many lives could be at risk and despite her own personal situation, she feels the need to solve this case.
Perhaps to ease her own guilt at the circumstances that led to her suspension.
Whatever the case may be, Karen is determined and on a mission to stop the games from hurting anyone else.
Then we have Howard, Karen's colleague and friend, who after getting Karen involved in this latest case, finds himself more involved than is necessary.
Big Brother is watching you!
The Host videos each game and posts it online for all to see and makes sure that everyone is scared, letting all who watch know that anyone can be the next player, he is watching you.
It’s a race against time to try and stop the host initiating new players and you just hope that the detectives manage to work it out.
The Players is truly terrifying!
My adrenalin was pumping as I read, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.
With only 24 hours between each game, the tension builds at a rapid rate and with every game played the stakes increase and the consequences become more devastating. I was rooting for the police to reach game over status ASAP.
Violent, heart-breaking and startling.
Darren O'Sullivan has written a story that is cunning and decisive. The twists and turns are expertly executed and the ending will leave you with your mouth wide open.
I know it is said a lot but this really is a must read!
