 Sometimes we all need a good laugh.

Something to make us stop and forget our worries.

For me a good book can do this and Phoebe Luckhurst certainly hit the spot with her debut novel The Lock In. 

This is definitely a rom-com for the modern ages.

One Saturday morning, while nursing The Hangover from Hell, a flooded kitchen leads best mates Ellen and Alexa, and hapless housemate Jack, into their attic to turn off the water supply.

But when Ben - Alexa's date from the night before - walks in, the door slams, the handle breaks and all four of them are trapped.

Cue The Worst morning-after-the-night before.

As the hours tick by, Ellen nurses her sore head and watches as her best friend falls for this handsome stranger.

Only for a horrifying realisation to hit. She is sure she knows Ben from somewhere.

Frantically searching her memories, Ellen tries to piece together exactly how they've met before.

When a distant memory finally comes to her, she desperately wonders: could Ben really be who she thinks he is . . .

And more importantly, what on earth is she going to do about it . . .

Told from three points of view, we are rather rapidly introduced to three very different housemates - Ellen, Jack and Alexa (not forgetting Alexa's latest date Ben).

Hysterical from the beginning, it's like an episode in a reality TV show but in book form.

After discovering a flood in the kitchen, this unlikely trio + good old Ben find themselves trapped in their attic. I'll let you read the story to discover just how they ended up there but even that event in itself is humorous.

This is a hilarious story of housemates and hangovers and friendship and dating as four twenty-somethings discover what The Worst morning-after-the-night-before really looks like . . .

As the story progresses and we're wondering just how they'll eventually escape, all the while Jack is sporadically tweeting about what's going on, think awkward arguments and peeing in a box.

It's more hilarious because I could honestly picture this sort of thing happening in real life.

Mentions of MSN had me reminiscing about my teen years.

Fans of Dolly Alderton, Beth O'Leary and Mhairi McFarlane will LOVE this oh-so relatable tale of love, landlords and what can happen behind locked doors

When things go from bad to worse the entertainment actually increases.

I particularly liked the development of the relationships/friendships. It was quite an honest portrayal and I could imagine how I'd react if I'd been put in a similar situation.

I'll admit I have a definite soft spot for Jack - the underdog.

You've heard of a locked room mystery, now get ready for a locked room rom-com!

Easy, quick and amusing.

There is a clever combination of drama, tension and wit which culminate to an ideal conclusion.

The Lock In is hilarious and heart-warming. With a cast of likeable and slightly eccentric characters and a storyline that is fresh and well paced, this is a novel that could prove to be a modern day classic.
