Sometimes in life you really just need to smile, to find something to put a bit of positivity back into your life.
If you are a person that likes to read (like me) then Fiona Gibson is the author to give you a little joy.
This bestselling author is back with her latest novel, When Life Gives You Lemons ... just add gin and tonic! And I was lucky enough to get a slot on the blog tour to promote this utterly hilarious story.
Sometimes life can be bittersweet . . .
Between tending to the whims of her seven-year-old and the demands of her boss, Viv barely gets a moment to herself. It’s not quite the life she wanted, but she hasn’t run screaming for the hills yet.
But then Viv’s husband Andy makes his mid-life crisis her problem. He’s having an affair with his (infuriatingly age-appropriate) colleague, a woman who – unlike Viv – doesn’t put on weight when she so much as glances at a cream cake.
Viv suddenly finds herself single, with zero desire to mingle. Should she be mourning the end of life as she knows it, or could this be the perfect chance to put herself first?
When life gives you lemons, lemonade just won’t cut it. Bring on the gin!
Viv is a woman in her fifties. After a long struggle to have a second child, she was lucky to be surprised with her now seven year old daughter but happy families don't always last forever ...
Life as we know it
People say that life begins at fifty but Viv seems to have reached crisis point.
Whilst going through the menopause she is also dealing with a cheating husband, looking after an energetic younger child and worrying about her older son who no longer lives at home.
This is story that looks at the before and after of divorce in a brilliantly realistic way.
Characterisation
What really makes this story is the characters. Viv works as a PA for Rose at Flaxico, a male dominated global food company. Rose is an extremely quirky character, as a boss I'm nor sure I could work for her but to read about, very amusing. Then there's Penny, one of Viv's friend, who is keen to introduce her son to Viv.
I love the thoughts of Viv - the things she wants to say but manages not to. We can all think of times where we've had to hold our tongue and say the complete opposite to what we truly believe.
Moving on
I feel like there is an underlying message in this book, not to put your life on hold, to take risks.
Viv ends up being quite an inspirational woman!
You've got to laugh
When Life Gives You Lemons is full of humour and wit.
It's an easy read that leaves you with a sense of hope at the end.
Now I've never read a book written by Fiona before, I am now left wondering why the hell not. This tale had me feeling all kinds of emotions and although I'm not the same age as the protagonist Viv, I could still relate to a lot of what she was feeling all be it under different circumstances.

I really like the sound of this book and now I want to know how Viv's story ends :)

This book sounds great, but even just the title alone sells it to me
ReplyDeleteAt first I was thinking I didn't like the sound of this, but when I realised she was in her 50s rather than her 30s I was more interested! There aren't many books around about women of that age (which isn't far off my own age), so it and makes a refreshing change.
