I was lucky enough to have the chance to be a part of the blog tour for Jessica Eames' latest novel, Bad Seed. This is what I would describe as a domestic thriller and in my initial preview review on Goodreads I said in capital letters (to get my point across clearly) that it kept me guessing the whole way through and there aren't many stories that manage to do that these days.
A tragic death. A dark family secret. A past you can't escape. How well do you really know those closest to you?
Sarah's world has descended into a nightmare. Her only hope of moving on is to find out the truth of what happened and make sure the guilty are brought to justice. She is haunted by her dad's death, consumed by her grief and the memories of a cruel day that changed her life forever... she doesn't even know who she is anymore. But the future holds some hope for Sarah, as she tries to move forward.
Nicola's future is not looking so hopeful. Since her husband died, the secret she's been keeping from her family - especially her daughter, Sarah - is eating away at her. The past is catching up with her, and the consequences will be devastating.
The whole tale is based around family and as you begin to read it becomes increasingly apparent that secrets have been kept which has made this family into a rather complicated one.
Nicola - who is one of the main protagonists - lost her husband a year ago, a death that I first thought must have more to it than meets the eye. Nicola is trying to move on, she's doing the very best she can. She has a new job working in the local cafe, a positive move but part trying to move forward also meant moving into the annex in her brother-in-law's garden. This is complicated by the fact that she has a new boyfriend.
All of these things don't sound very suspicious though do they?
However when you add in the fact that she has been feeling rather under the weather, things start to look more complicated then first thought.
Nicola's symptoms according to the doctor present themselves as the menopause, something which she and her family all accept until Nicola starts to notice things going missing/being tampered with around her home.
Is she going crazy, is that part of the menopause or us there something more sinister at play?
The story is rather cleverly told from three points of view, those being Nicola, her daughter Sarah, and her sister in law Fiona.
Each character adds a real depth to the story and kept it running at a thrillingly, fast pace. I literally could not put it down. With so many sub stories, it was like a really dark episode of Eastenders playing out.
You think you can trust your family but who do you turn when you feel like you have no one left looking out for you?
With suspects galore, every time I thought I'd managed to slot in part of the puzzle, I felt like I lost another.
This is a story about family, secrets and obsessions. Deliciously dark and creatively compelling, Bad Seed really is a must read thriller. Even if this isn't your typical genre, I believe this could be the book to make you want to read more like it!

ReplyDeleteThis sounds like just my sort of book! I like stories where you don't really know who to believe, so they keep you guessing right until the end.
ReplyDeleteThis definitely sounds like a book I would love
