I love a book that manages to be entertaining whilst having a lesson to be taught within too and that's exactly what you get in author John Briggs' latest release, Leaping Lemmings. The girls were kindly sent a copy to review and has quickly become one of their favourite stories.
All lemmings look alike, sound alike, and act alike. Except one. He doesn't fit in at all. He bangs on the bongos and eats pepperoni pizza with hot sauce. The other lemmings think he's nuts. But when they make a dangerous decision, can he stop them from blindly following each other?
I said at the start of this post that this story has become a favourite in this house and I agree with my girls. With the mix of short, funny and easy to read sentences and the oh so cute lemmings on every page, it is a real recipe for success.
'If all you friends jumped off a cliff, would you?"
The above sentence is something I've found myself saying to my girls at times and it's a good question, would you really follow? Leaping Lemmings is a tale that will make you laugh but it will also make you think but it's done in a way that is wonderfully entertaining.

As I turned the pages and read I was asking my daughters whether they'd prefer to dress the same others, eat the same foods etc and they all replied no, my eldest made the point that she doesn't like everything that her sisters' do so why would she want to be the same as them, wise words from a child.
A favourite part from all of us was when the little lemming found the polar bears, maybe not quite what he expected but I'll let you read it to find out exactly why but I will say it had us all chuckling a lot.
Leaping Lemmings (£12.99) is a wonderfully quirky and entertaining picture books which manages to showcase to kids that being different is more than ok, in fact it is better to like other things, to dress in something that perhaps isn't 'on trend', it's boring being the same as everyone else. I always tell my girls, be unique, be you!
What a great message! I'm hoping my daughter can stay unique and not fall into the trap of conforming when she goes to secondary school.
ReplyDeleteThe illustrations are really cute and it's a good message to get across in a book.
