Rent a Bridesmaid Book Review

jacqueline-wilson-rent-a-bridesmaid

If you've read some of my previous book reviews then you will know that my eldest daughter is the biggest fan of Jacqueline Wilson so it came as no surprise when I agreed to review her latest book, Rent a Bridesmaid.

Tilly's got a whole wardrobe full of bridesmaid's dresses - a pale pink one, a blue one, even a red one with a soft white trim. The only problem is, they're all in her imagination. In real life, it's Tilly's best friend Matty who has the beautiful pink dress to wear at the perfect white wedding. Tilly can't help being a teeny tiny bit jealous - more than anything in the world, she would love to be a bridesmaid at her own mum and dad's wedding. But that isn't going to happen. In fact, Tilly's worried she's never going to be a bridesmaid. So she decides to take matters into her own hands - and offers her bridesmaid's services for hire...

Rent a Bridesmaid is written in the same style that we have come to know and love from Jacqueline Wilson, with it's accompanying illustrations from Nick Sharratt, I could tell almost instantly that I'd end up loving both the story and the characters it contained.

Before I say anymore let my 10 year old daughter tell you her thoughts about it :

Rent a Bridesmaid is a gripping story with loads of emotion. It is about a young girl named Tilly. Her best friend has given her a raspberry pink bridesmaid's dress but she will never be able to wear it. So Tilly takes matters into her own hands and puts herself up for rent as a bridesmaid.

My favourite part is that she includes characters from my favourite Jacqueline Wilson book, The Worst Thing About My Sister. My favourite character just has to be Matty. If I met any of the characters at school we would definitely be friends for life. I would love to see a second book about Tilly's job as a bridesmaid.

This story is heart-warming and would make a great addition to anyone's bookshelf. This fits in perfectly with the rest of Jacqueline Wilson's other books. I think this should be a future treasured classic.

This is a tale that although thoroughly entertaining, manages to touch on quite a few subjects. Tilly's mum has walked out on her and her dad, she's dealing with making new friends and of course the pangs of jealousy that come with growing up, wanting what others have got. I would describe it almost as a coming of age story.

As my daughter quite rightly said, Rent a Bridesmaid fits in wonderfully with the rest of Jacquleine Wilson's stories, just the right mix of emotion and drama, highly recommended.

  1. It sounds like a great book! I always loved Jacqueline Wilson's books (even now). I think I may have to get this for my sister, then I can sneakily read it too.

  3. This sounds like a great story. I would like to introduce my eight year old to Jacqueline Wilson but I'm not sure if she is old enough for any of her books yet.

    1. My 8 year old daughter reads them and has no problem understanding them, I'd say that's about the right age to start them :)

  5. It sounds great! We were actually looking at this in the bookshop the other day. We love Jacqueline Wilson books here too (they always make me cry!), but my daughter is rather a slow reader, so we don't get through as many as I would like.

  7. I've never read a Jacqueline Wilson book - perhaps because I have sons rather than daughters? This does sound good though! #readwithme

  9. Like Maddy I've never read Jacqueline Wilson books, it's more Dr Seuss over here! This sounds like a great book and if I hear of any girls after a good read I'll recommend it. Great review #readwithme
