Earlier this month I was sent a fantastic book for the kids, well not just a book because it magically transforms into something just as fascinating. Miles Kelly Convertible Submarine is a brilliant interactive book and that is why I have chosen it as my May book of the month.
This is the newest book in their convertibles series, you can already purchase fire engines, spaceships, princess carriages, pirate ships, trains and bulldozers. I'm thinking airplanes and emergency services would be great additions for the future.
If you haven't seen this collection before I will explain a little. This is essentially a 3 in 1 storybook. It starts as a lovely story that you can read with your child, converting into a simple play mat and ending up being built as a certain vehicle, in this case a submarine.
The concept is perfect for young readers as it manages to entertain them in so many ways and allows them to really get immersed into the story and carry on the theme long after the actual story has finished.
Aimed at 3-6 year olds this hardback book is truly captivating. With bright, playful illustrations combined with a simple story, it is easy to follow but gives plenty of opportunities to ask questions and to learn.
In this story we are searching for a shipwreck but along the way we discover all sorts of sea life, from different fish, to what they like to eat. Layla was content in both listening to me tell the story but also sitting by herself and telling me what was happening as she turned the pages.
Turning the book into a play mat gives your child to see the story as a whole and once converted into a submarine the fun continues. With a window to look through and a door to open, the submarine allows for their imaginations to really work, just where in the sea might they be travelling?
Putting the submarine together was a simple and quick task and of course because it folds back into a book after, you will have no problem storing it away. I found it to be well made because it's been used continually over the past few weeks and there have been no signs of damage or wear.

My daughter is testament to just how good this storybook is because she sat in it for hours when converted into a submarine merrily reading the story whilst inside and she has requested quite a few times that she be allowed to sleep in there too!
As a parent I highly recommend it. The convertible story promotes learning through play which is something I really believe in. Younger children will be drawn in by the pictures and early readers get the chance to improve their reading schools and if that wasn't enough it comes with my kids approval too.
