The Dreamsnatcher Book Review

My daughter and I are very much alike when it comes to reading, we love books and even better when we get to discover new authors. We were recently chosen to read and review Abi Elphinstone's debut book, The Dreamsnatcher, we couldn't wait to get stuck in…

Moll Oecksniff wakes one night in the middle of the forest, lured there by a recurring nightmare - the one with the drums and the rattles and the masks. The Dreamsnatcher is waiting…

Because Moll is more important than she knows. The Oracle Bones foretold that she and Gryff, a wildcat who's always been by her side, are the only ones who can fight back against the Dreamsnatcher's dark sorcery. Suddenly everything is at stake, and Moll finds herself drawn into a world of secrets, magic and adventure.

Right from the prologue, the book introduces mystery, drama and intrigue. Just who are these cloaked figures?
The figure draws back its hood and in its hand is a shard of black ice. 'So it begins,' the figure says.

Chapter one introduces us to Moll, a 12 year old girl who we quickly discover that she suffers from nightmares and not random ones, no the same reocurring, terrifying nightmare all the time.

She lives in the Ancientwood with her protective wildcat Gryff, Oak the great leader of the camp and his wife Mooshie who found Moll abandoned, a stray left in the forest with no family.

The atmosphere from the beginning is one that has you on the edge of your seat, the world that we are taken into and the characters that reside in it are perfectly described. Magical is how I would describe everything as a whole.

'All trees have spirit, Moll, and they lend it to us if we listen hard.'

There is a real sense of good versus evil throughout the book and with dark magic at play, danger seems to be lurking right round the corner.

Moll is out to discover the truth. Just why is she having these nightmares, what do they mean? Why does Skull keep appearing in them?

A real adventure plays out and Moll isn't alone on her journey, along with her wildcat Gryff, she is also joined by her best friend Siddy and the mysterious one called Alfie.

Here's what my daughter thought :

The Dreamsnatcher was a scary yet charming and touching story. I enjoyed the riddles and trying to solve them.

I think Mellentha (a good witch) was very kind to help Moll, Alfie and Gryff.

The start and the end of the book were filled with suspense and they got me wondering what would happen next?

My final verdict, magical and mysterious book that I would recommend to all of my friends.

My conclusion. The Dreamsnatcher is a fantastically magical debut novel, perfect not only for children but for adults too. One filled with mystery, drama, courage, friendship and family. A real page turner which is fast paced and has you eager to know what will happen next. Cannot wait for book two!!.

  10. She looks so intent there, reading. I might add this to our list for the holidays, I will give it a read first, as Em is a bit younger, so it might need me to read it with her!
