Recently The Works kindly sent the Divergent series of books to me. This is another set of books which has now been made into a film and I suppose you would compare it to stories like Twilight and The Hunger Games.
In the world of Divergent, society is divided into five factions - Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Amity
and Erudite. Every year all sixteen year olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives.
For Beatrice Prior, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is. Her choice shocks everyone, including herself
During the initiation that follow, Tris and her fellow initiates undergo extreme physical tests of endurance and intense psychological simulations, with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them, Tris must determine who her friends really are and whether she can trust the man who both threatens and protects her.
Because Tris has adeadly secret. And as growing conflict threatens to unravel their seemingly perfect society, this secret might save those she loves… or it might destroy her.
Now this is a tough review to write because it is hard to say things without giving away parts of the story and as much as I didn't want to believe the hype, you really need to experience it all yourself as the trilogy really is that good.
The story of Divergent follows Beatrice (Tris) in a new world, a world broken down into five different 'factions', Candor for the honest, Erudite for the clever, Amity for the peaceful, Dauntless for the brave and Abnegation for the selfless.
The book has been written in a first person perspective of Tris herself.
When a child reaches the age of sixteen they must select which faction they belong to. Tris knows even before she takes her aptitude test that she doesn't really belong in her families faction, Abnegation but she didn't quite expect the answers that she would be given. She has not one, not even two but three factions, she is infact Divergent. This is something considered quite dangerous in their world although it is never before been clear why because it is not something that people discuss, this is Tris's secret to keep now.
At initiation day Tris chooses to leave her family and become Dauntless and in each every book she does indeed show herself to be not only brave but strong willed and inspiring too!!
Initiation is where we meet Four, one of Tris's instructors. Now before you go saying anything, this isn't your typical romance, Tris and Four don't automatically fall in love and all that jazz, their relationship builds throughout the trilogy and it sometimes it takes a backseat to the rest of the story. It is however a relationship that I got invested in and I was silently willing them to be together.
As the story progresses we see wars break out and families torn apart, emotions defintely run high.
Veronica Roth has somehow managed to create a world that doesn't seem like a fantasy, infact it comes across as scarily believable. The characters come alive on the pages and I could really relate to a part of each of them as they aren't perfect, every single one of them has flaws, this made them very real.
The whole trilogy, is captivating, action packed, full of suspense and most definitely unpredictable. I was honestly shocked by the time I got to the end of the third book, I didn't see the ending coming!!! And I have to admit that it wasn't the ending that I had hoped for but I can understand why it was written the way it was.
I highly recommend that you all read the Divergent series if you haven't already, it is more than a fictional story as I feel there is a lot of truth in what Veronica has written. This is a set that I will definitely be re-reading.
